Ford Student Center opens at Amherst College
The Ford Student Center and Dining Commons at Amherst College has officially opened, transforming the former Merrill Science Center into a new hub for student life designed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Sasaki. Supported by our team as façade consultants, the four-story building retains and repurposes the existing concrete structure of the lower two levels while adding two new mass-timber floors above. Large windows, terraces, and outdoor spaces connect the building to the surrounding campus and Holyoke Range, while a diverse mix of dining, social, cultural, and recreational spaces creates a new crossroads for campus life.
