The Metropolitan Museum of Art breaks ground on the Tang Wing

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially broken ground on the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing, a 126,000-square-foot reimagining of its modern and contemporary art galleries designed by Frida Escobedo Studio, with Beyer Blinder Belle serving as executive architect. Supported by our team as façade consultants, the project features a distinctive limestone celosía, or architectural screen, whose intricate stone lattice draws inspiration from diverse architectural traditions and creates a dynamic surface that responds to changing daylight. The new five-story wing will expand exhibition space to 69,500 square feet while enhancing accessibility, natural lighting, and energy performance through carefully articulated façades and strategically placed glazing. Remaining within the Museum’s existing footprint, the project is expected to open to the public in 2030.
