Yale Dramatics Arts Building

New Haven, CT, USA
Architect
KPMB Architects

The new Yale Dramatic Arts Building is a 207,000 sq ft (19,230 sq) facility designed to consolidate the university’s performing arts disciplines within a single, integrated complex. The seven-story structure will accommodate eight programs, including the David Geffen School of Drama, the Yale Repertory Theater, the Yale Dramatic Association, and the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies. The design incorporates a comprehensive range of functional spaces, including rehearsal studios, academic classrooms, administrative offices, and specialized production workshops. Two performance venues are planned: an intimate 100-seat theater for smaller-scale productions and a 400-seat main theater serving the Yale Repertory Theater. Designed to align with Yale’s Zero Carbon Ready initiative, the project prioritizes sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term operational performance. The exterior features a refined limestone facade paired with double-glazed window systems, optimizing both thermal performance and visual transparency. A careful balance of visible and enclosed performance spaces promotes a dynamic interaction between the building’s interior creative activity and its public presence.
