Sixth&Blanco
The Sixth&Blanco project in Austin, Texas, is a mixed-use development occupying a city block on West Sixth Street, near downtown and the Colorado River. Embracing the neighborhood’s characteristics, the design integrates greenery, passive cooling, an active storefront, and a natural material palette. The continuous wooden structure creates a village with shops, restaurants, retail, event spaces, a hotel, and residences. The building steps back, maintaining a human scale and comfort. Hotel rooms provide an intimate indoor/outdoor experience, while upper-level residences offer true indoor/outdoor living. The project prioritizes sustainability with passive cooling, rainwater collection, solar energy harvesting, and mass timber and concrete elements.
Front actively collaborates on the project, contributing to the entire building envelope’s design. The team developed aluminum-framed storefronts with textured glass, heated glass, and layering of colored interlayers into insulated glass units. Front also developed glass guardrails ensuring safety and uninterrupted views, and horizontal waterproofing and roofing systems. Opaque wall assemblies such as timber rainscreens, exterior tile, brick cavity walls and perforated brick screen walls. Shading systems like exterior canopies, and Building Integrated Photovoltaics contribute to sustainability. Front’s effort results in a facade blending innovation, functionality, and aesthetic appeal for the success of Sixth&Blanco.
