This museum, on the MSU campus, is unique among contemporary art museums in that it also houses an extensive collection of works spanning across many cultures and historical periods. It is therefore contemporary within a historical context, much like the new building design, which is clearly innovative, yet informed by the historical landscape and physical surroundings. The stainless steel and glass façade appears as a sharp tectonic form arising out of the landscape in contrasting directional pleats, informed by existing site conditions, circulation, and connections. Folding and pleating is used as a design and organizational device, resulting in the final design for the46,000 ft² (4,274 m²) museum. The primary façade systems include composite stainless steel panels, which are v-cut and folded, and a canted curtain wall glazing system. Front collaborated with the design and construction team on all components of the enclosure and glazing systems from schematic design through construction administration.
