The University Health Services Center reinterprets the urban design of the Yale campus block in a dense triangular plan, whose hand-made, manganese iron spot brick façades are softened by gentle, hyperbolic curvature, and deep radial cuts and a vertical ‘light scoop’ that illuminate the interiors and provide intuitive way-finding for visitors. An undulating steel and glass curtain wall encloses the four-story atrium at the northwest entrance lobby. The 147,000 ft2 (13,660m2) extensively corbelled masonry building is articulated by alternating bullnose and Norman brick courses, and a language of deeply recessed, punched windows surrounded by flat seam zinc cladding. Exterior balconies and roof terraces are wrapped with custom profiled aluminum louvers. Front consulted on the building enclosure from schematic design through construction administration.
