Troy Block Catenary Lighting
Troy block is one of the three superblocks in Seattle, and it comprises three structures standing in the heart of South Lake Union neighborhood. The master plan includes the partial retention and integration of two existing 20th century landmark historic buildings into new 12 and 13 storey office towers. Grain, color, and proportion tie the new structures with these existing facades. Together, the three buildings produce a central entry courtyard that connects them together.
Front assisted in the design of a custom overhanging catenary light system that spans between the buildings. The custom lighting design provides an overhead star-like constellation that illuminates the column-free entry courtyard. The buildings are in a seismically active region and are propense to high differential movements. Front worked with the architectural team at Perkins + Will and the specialist façade contractor Benson Global to design a custom seismic compensation spring pack that can absorb the high differential movements of the area and hold the cable lines straight. Front provided design for the cables, brackets, curtainwall penetrations and tensioning sequencing. Our collaboration helped the team fulfill the design intent with a sleek and elegant lighting solution for their LEED®-Gold certified building.
