Storm King is a 500-acre art and cultural center located in the Hudson Valley of New York with large-scale sculpture and site-specific programming. The center’s expansion consists of supporting buildings and services that will enhance and facilitate the overall visitor experience while blending into the surrounding landscape. Front consulted on the design of all above grade vertical and horizontal envelope systems for the two Welcome pavilions and the Conservation, Fabrication, and Maintenance (CFM) building from the middle of the construction documents phase through construction administration. Front’s scope for the two Welcome pavilions includes the rainscreen façade system with timber cladding, timber windows, standing seam roof, TPO roof, canopy with timber fascia, GFRC cladding, skylights, custom timber shutters, and custom timber overclad doors.

The two Welcome pavilions are clad with thermally modified timber planks. Front was involved in extensive timber research to determine the best product for use, studying species, treatments, and finishes that are best suited for Storm King’s particular environment. Adhering to the thermal performance requirements, which necessitated the wall build-up to perform at a very high level, a series of thermal analyses were run to determine the wall build-ups that met the project requirements. The façade system for the CFM building consists of insulated metal panels with corrugated metal cladding outboard, providing a very uniform rhythm to the large façade. The cladding panels are interrupted by large overhead doors. The roof is a TPO system with skylights that bring natural light into the large workspace. Front’s scope for the CFM building includes the insulated metal panel with custom cladding, large overhead doors, TPO roof, aluminum window system, custom overclad doors, and skylights.
