Rio House

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Architect
Olson Kundig Architects

The Rio House, a private residence located within Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park, exemplifies the fusion of modern architecture and sustainable design principles within a tropical rainforest setting. The design, characterized by a steel and glass box structure supported by concrete piers, seamlessly integrates with the surrounding lush greenery.

The compact footprint of the Rio House belies its spacious and inviting interior. The use of locally sourced materials, including board-formed concrete walls, vibrant plaster interiors, and native wood finishes, fosters a harmonious connection between the home and its natural surroundings. Custom-designed steel pivot windows and retractable window walls effectively blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing residents to fully embrace the beauty of the rainforest.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the Rio House’s design. The openable windows, retractable window walls, and a rooftop hatch work in conjunction to maximize natural ventilation, reducing the reliance on artificial cooling systems. Front assisted Olson Kundig in the technical development of the windows, and the bespoke operating mechanisms were an important part of the architectural expression. The Rio House serves as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of architecture and nature, offering a tranquil retreat for those seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Brazilian rainforest.
