Qatar Education City Tram Stations
Qatar Education City People Mover System (QEC-PMS) is an 7.1 mi (11.5 km) tramway that will service the education and research campus west of Doha at the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development. The line will be the first operating rail transport system in Qatar, providing transportation around the Education City. There are interchanges planned with the future Doha Metro at the Qatar National Convention Centre, Metropolitan Centre, and car parks on the eastern side of the campus. The tramway is also expected to facilitate visitor transportation during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Front was contracted by Grimshaw as Façade and Glass Consultants to assist in the design and construction of a total of 17 tram stations, comprising of three station typologies. Each station features a glazed canopy and each station platform allows for an enclosed and environmentally controlled waiting room.
Front designed the glazed canopy as an assembly of triple laminated glass panels, which are three-point supported on a double-layered cable net system. The cable net and supporting steel masts were developed by Schlaich Bergermann Partner while Front designed the glazing systems and custom stainless steel glazing clamps. The glazing clamp shapes were developed to maximum material efficiency while achieving the design intent. The glass panels use tinted glass and multiple layers of frit to provide adequate shade for tram users and also to propagate a uniform and a visually rich pattern. Additionally, the top glass surface is coated with an hydrophobic coating to minimize cleaning cycles and the bottom glass surface is acid etched to allow soft and diffused up-lighting at night. The waiting rooms are envisioned as a transparent ‘pod,’ with all walls composed of insulated glass with louver shades integrated within the glazing cavity. Corners of waiting room walls are of curved insulted glass panels and waiting rooms are equipped with automated sliding doors with seating inside for user comfort.
