Pattern Shift Art Installation
Artists Miriam Sleeman and Tom Sloan of design collective miriamandtom are renowned for immersive light installations including the Skyscape light installation at the West End Concourse of Penn Station, New York. At Pacific Place, Hong Kong’s leading retail destination, miriamandtom designed bespoke LED lighting installations positioned throughout the building’s atrium space that give occupants the feeling of being under a flowing fabric of shifting patterns.
Front assisted miriamandtom in developing and engineering a lightweight custom-extruded aluminum framing system that visually recedes and provides raceways and supports for the circuitry and computer controls. A central challenge was designing a system that could be assembled quickly, overnight. The framing was designed to arrive to site as a series of unitized diamond-shaped panels that could easily be handled and fastened together. Mockup deflection testing was used to build confidence that the assemblies would have no perceptible sag.
