This project involved the renovation and redesign of the 28,000 ft2 (2600 m2) public atrium and lobby of Park Avenue Plaza in midtown Manhattan. The through-block arcade boasts a dramatic sheer colonnade of eight massive sculptural, round-edged clear-acrylic piers. The space features movable seating, a stone reflecting pool and small café. A welcoming botanical installation of climbing vines ends nine feet above the floor, extending the full city block, while natural light filters in from a skylight.

Front collaborated with the architects as glass and acrylic consultants on key components of the redesign, including glass wall cladding with glass tubes, planter glass wall cladding, and the free standing acrylic columns, that together accentuate the interplay of the areas using clean vertical grid and heightened transparency. The glass wall cladding is constructed of 3 ft (0.9 m) wide by 23.6 ft (7.2 m) tall glass panels at the east wall and 3 ft (0.9 m) wide by 17.4 ft (5.3 m) tall glass panels on the west mezzanine wall. Each glass panel is laminated, heat-strengthened and is rendered opaque using metallic frit. Three outward-facing vertical strips of custom formed glass tubes house acrylic rod lighting lenses that carry light from fiber optic light source located at top of each panel. The planter glass cladding panels are each of the 6 ft (1.8 m) wide by 7.8 ft (2.4 m) tall and serve as back-up cladding to cable-hung planters. The resulting bright and inviting atrium provides respite from the dense urban surroundings.
