Memphis Art Museum

The Memphis Art Museum is part of the larger expansion of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art established in 1916. The new building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located Downtown, houses 112,000 sf of exhibition space, a 175-theater, and public courtyard with expansive views to the west across the Mississippi River. The brick façade echoes the materiality and form of the bluff on which the museum is cited and a landscaped roof garden echoes the adjacent riverfront park. Aluminium and timber framed curtain walls open the entrance, cafe, shop, and flexible gallery space to the public on Front Street, provide daylighting for courtyard facing galleries and theater, and frame views of the river from pause spaces situated between galleries. The project incorporates exterior timber cladding at the courtyard and roof pavilion, as well as metal panel cladding at the theater and canopies.
