This new synagogue provides worship, social and educational space for the LSS modern orthodox congregation in the Upper West Side of New York. The 52,000 ft² (4,830 m²) facility features an undulating glass façade, with five horizontal ribbons, to represent the five books of the Torah. Each façade ribbon is faceted by narrow 15.7 in (400 mm wide) insulated, low-e, heat-strengthened glass units with pleated fabric laminated in the exterior lite and a ceramic frit pattern at the interior. This combination is UV-filtering and provides privacy for the synagogue worshipers. The panels vary in height from approximately 8 ft (2.4 m) to 16 ft (4.9 m). The curtain wall framing is a custom aluminum stick-built system.

Front’s collaboration on the project began in schematic design and continued through design development, at which point Front completed the glass façade and interior glass wall as part of the design-build team. To facilitate precise in-house fabrication of all aluminum components, structural calculations, shop drawings and fabrications drawings were completed and the comprehensive system design was fully resolved to a high level of detail. The complexity of the project required the development of extensive rule-based associative computer models to streamline design and fabrication of all façade components. This model allowed changes in global geometry to easily be incorporated, updating the façade design and fabrication drawings. For example, after the primary steel structure was erected, Front updated the BIM model to include this as-built information, ensuring the façade would fit the building as designed.
