Serving as the new headquarters for Kum & Go in downtown Des Moines, this open-plan, six-story office was designed to provide Kum & Go associates with a modern and highly collaborative work environment that offers both flexibility and room for growth. Outdoor meeting areas, a rooftop garden, and fitness facilities foster a comfortable and adaptive work environment. The first two floors house an art collection behind a 29 ft (8.8 m) tall insulated glass fin wall. This space is open to the public, and acts as a natural extension of the adjacent sculpture park.
The building is characterized by uninterrupted glass perimeters and dramatic expansive canopies. The façade of the upper office floors reinforces the structure with a continuous steel transom, supported by glass fin down-stands. To reduce vertical joint widths, Front developed a custom method for supporting the glass and accommodating structural movements. Front provided design assistance and analysis for the all glass façades, and additionally worked in close collaboration with the architects in developing the overhang insulated soffit cladding which provides an artistic element to the building while increasing energy efficiency.
