This highly-transparent, jewel-box-like pavilion, located at the Brooklyn waterfront between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, houses a newly relocated and carefully restored 1920’s era carousel. The carousel pavilion is a well-utilized public amenity that links Pebble Beach and Pier 1. The design, by Jean Nouvel, features two walls that are completely operable, creating a hybrid indoor/outdoor space. Front’s collaboration on the project began with the initial concept and lasted through construction administration. The scope of work included engineering and design consulting for the entire enclosure, including the two vertical façade systems as well as the skylight system. Two walls of the façade are composed of 4.5 in (114mm) thick, 9 x 27 ft (2.7 x 8.2 m), acrylic panels, separated by custom silver foil gaskets, designed to accommodate deflection. The other two walls are completely operable and utilize articulating, steel-framed, bi-fold doors inspired by systems typically used in the aircraft hanger industry. The large oculus skylight above the carousel is modeled on a bicycle wheel structural typology and utilizes a steel tension ring and tensile spokes.
