This building complex in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood was originally constructed in 1966 as a seaman’s mission for the Maritime Union. The design by Handel Architects adapted three volumes of the complex to create a 12-story hotel including 184,000 ft2 (17094 m2) of hotel accommodations, dining, and entertainment spaces. The original building featured porthole style windows, which are recalled in the new circular pivoting fenestration and perforated stainless steel cladding. The extensive new façades also feature pool-bottom skylights that filter natural light to the basement club, private balconies with glass balustrades, and custom over-sized doors at the roof terrace bar and main entrances. Front consulted on all of these systems from schematic design through construction administration.
