A private residence for art patrons in Aspen, Colorado, this building is perched on the south-facing slopes of an aspen-forested valley. The south side of the building features cantilevered timber decks under deep, shading roof canopies. To the north, a 35-degree monopitch roof aligns with the steep natural topography below, and clerestory glazing allows views of the snow-capped ridge above. Exposed, laminated timber rafters and floor joists project to the exterior, in a repeating module that mimics the vertical stainless steel-framed fenestration. The wall and roof glazing systems all feature composite carbon fiber and stainless steel framing whose articulated members measure just one by four inches. Front collaborated with the design and construction teams from schematic design through construction administration, and developed the design for all custom glazing systems throughout the project.
