Pittsburgh International Airport’s New Terminal Featured in Architectural Record

Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal has been featured in Architectural Record, highlighting the project’s strong connection to the identity and landscape of Western Pennsylvania. Designed by Gensler and HDR in collaboration with Luis Vidal + Architects, the 811,000-square-foot terminal draws inspiration from the region’s rolling hills and forests, expressed through its sweeping rooflines and tree-like structural columns. The terminal’s undulating roof forms reflect the rolling landscape of Western Pennsylvania, while strategically placed skylights bring abundant natural light deep into the interior, and expansive glass walls create a strong visual connection between the building and its surrounding environment. The design incorporates landscaped outdoor terraces with native plantings, rainwater-harvesting systems, and a skybridge linking the new landside terminal to the existing airside concourse, improving passenger flow. Fully powered by the airport’s on-site microgrid, the terminal stands as a significant achievement in sustainable infrastructure and contemporary airport design.
